Corrections to Manuscript
(Last updated 14 May 2026)

GENERAL

Following the submission and publishing of the article, the need for changes may arise. Such changes can be effected by the Editor in Chief and the Editorial Board, following long deliberation and discussion. This discussion at times may also involve members of the GLOCAL Central Committee, in order to ensure compliance with the JALA policies and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

For significant and not minor issues (e.g. typographical errors, wrong syntax, etc.), the JALA will permanently include a notice describing the changes with the changes and the subsequently revised manuscript. Such alterations can appear as a simple Correction notice, as a Notice of Concern, as a full Retraction, or as a full Removal.

By including a post-publication notice, the JALA seeks to maintain its transparency, both to the Journal and to the action of correcting the manuscript, so as to maintain the integrity of the scholar and scholarly record.

CORRECTION STATEMENTS

At times when the JALA journal necessarily corrects an article or any other manuscript, the Journal will issue a correction statement. Here, the interpretation of the manuscript may shift owing to the error, but the integrity and the data included in the article remain unchanged.

The authors of the article shall write and view the correction statement, and shall thus verify its stipulation. However, at times when the publication process and the Journal or the Publishers have erred, the Journal may need to issue a correction without the direct contribution of the authors of the manuscript, but whom the Journal shall advise nonetheless.

Any petition for such corrections will at times be required to traverse the review process, and as such, the authors may need to interact with the review process.

The errors to be corrected can be large, as errors that alter the understanding of the article, yet retaining the scholarly integrity of the article as a whole, or small, which will not impact the reliability or perceptions of the article.

A correction notice must be issued and published for all major errors, including articulate information as to the issue and alterations. Here, the JALA shall make all necessary amendments, release the correction notice, include footnotes or endnotes within the article linking to the correction notice, and ensure that the notice is available to all without any inhibition. While a correction notice need not appear for minor errors, the Journal must include a footnote in the respective article as to the details of the correction. Should any party have concerns regarding the correction process, the Journal welcomes expressions of these concerns.

RETRACTING PAPERS

While Retractions at the JALA are extremely rare, such a process can be effected only at times when the errors are irreversible through the correction process. Examples of such an error include an erroneous method that distorts the results and postulates, during research misconduct, that is, during fabrication or deceitful research and writing practices, or in the abuse of any parties involved in the research and publication of the article.

To retract the article, as a sizable decision, the Journal will act through both the JALA policies and COPE guidelines, following an extensive and exhaustive investigation by the Journal and its Editorial board. The agents of instigation of the retraction may emanate from the JALA, the Authorship, or any party external to this process. To view such guidance by COPE, we include a link as follows: here.

While retraction constitutes a complex and intricate process, the instances that require attention to and consideration of retraction include the following:
  • Invalidity and unreliability of data and evidence arise, and possibly through acts of plagiarism, where the authors or any related parties have acted unethically or in any way to abuse the research and publication process, either deliberately or accidentally.
  • As with the above, the authors of the manuscript may have been found to intentionally produce fraudulent information, or information that has been devised dishonestly and in breach of publishing ethics.
  • The authors have not sufficiently nor accurately referenced included data, or have included data for which they have not correctly received permission.
  • The authors have interfered with the peer review process.
  • The authors or any other body have illicitly appropriated the manuscript for monetary gain, without legal allowance or without the strict and written agreement of the Journal.
  • The authors have in ways not adhered to their publishing agreement with the Journal.

In the event where the JALA Journal has decided to retract an article, it will:

  • Include a “retracted” watermark to the published ‘Version of Record’ of the article.
  • Publish a clearly organized statement that includes all information describing the retraction, and shall be entitled as such, also linked to the retracted article in the Journal.

REPORT

The JALA journal may attend to a Report at times when parties have contacted the Journal to comment on a violation of Journal processes. This report of concern may emanate from a direct process, an erroneous publication, or an erroneous correction process.

Following an investigation, the Journal shall issue a Retraction or otherwise a Correction notice, which shall appear together with the manuscript in the Journal.

The Journal shall consider these Reports as notices at times of: a significant lack of evidence of research, a violation of publication ethics; a publishing or research misconduct, or a biased publishing process.

ARTICLE REMOVAL

At times when other efforts cannot effect a resolution, the Journal may wish to enact a process of article removal. While such a process is not common, the Journal will do so as times when the article contains significantly inappropriate or dangerous content, when the article is ethically damaging or contains material that may endanger communities and their people, the article contains material that is damaging to the reputations and good standing of communities and their people, legal processes have been issued against the article.

At such a time, the Journal shall publish a notice of removal in the respective issue.

EXCURSUSES

As an Excursus, the JALA shall include additional information or other material to an article already published in the Journal.

Such an excursus shall in ways strengthen the already published articles, and does not act to correct already existing content. Depending on the extent of the additional content, the Journal may elect to resubmit the paper to the peer review process, and at the very least, the addended material shall be scrutinized by the Editorial Board.

At times when the Journal article does include an excursus, the Journal shall publish a notice together with the altered article.

COMMENTARIES

Commentaries, as short documents that speak to the already published articles, may at times comment on the published article, or may respond to a question regarding the article.

The commentary may be submitted to the peer review process, and as such, will require time prior to its placement in the Journal. Here, the Author is invited to comment on the commentary, and a discussion may transpire.

MATERIAL PRODUCT

Articles published by the Journal of Asian Linguistic Anthropology constitute the Material Product. That is, the final and citable version publishes in the JALA scholarly record. This Material Version is the article revised and published subsequent to the peer review process, and includes all content connected to the article (the abstract, the main body, references, tables, illustrations, data, acknowledgements, other material).
