Abstract

Framing strategies play a crucial role in shaping stance in news translation. The present study focuses on stance variation and selective appropriation in BBC News translation from English to Chinese in the online China Daily. This case study identifies the exact type of stance variation in accordance with the graduation subsystem of Appraisal Theory.

Under the guidance of narrative theory, the study then reveals the framing strategy of selective appropriation. Finally, the study explores how the stance variation in the target text is shaped through the framing strategy of selective appropriation in translation, and analyzes the hidden constraints of translators’ decisions.
